How do I know if I qualify for a commercial or non-commercial subscription?

If you are using Gedcom.Net SDK to obtain direct or indirect commercial advantage or monetary compensation, you need a commercial subscription. For other use cases, you may be eligible for a non-commercial subscription depending on the specific scenario. Below is a list of use cases and how they would qualify. If your situation is not addressed in this section, please contact sales@patagames.com.

commercial usage

  • You are using Gedcom.Net SDK in order to create a product for which you obtain monetary compensation, regardless of your employment status (i.e. you can be employed by a company, self-employed, etc.)

  • You are using Gedcom.Net SDK in order to provide consulting or other services for which you obtain monetary compensation.

  • You are using Gedcom.Net SDK to create training and/or educational materials for which you obtain monetary compensation.

  • You are working on an open-source project as part of your day job for which you are paid a salary.

non-commercial usage

Any scenario that doesn’t fall into Commercial Usage, including:

  • You are working on a product or service that you are providing for free and not receiving any monetary compensation for.

  • You are working on an open-source project in an altruistic manner and are not getting paid a salary.

  • You are working on an open-source project in an altruistic manner and are receiving occasional sponsorships and/or donations.

  • You are participating in an educational course or using Gedcom.Net SDK for learning purposes.

  • You are creating free content and/or educational materials and providing them for free on YouTube or other free mediums.

  • You are using Getcom.Net SDK to create/store/import/export your own family tree.

I work as a freelancer/consultant. Should I buy a commercial subscription?

Yes, you should purchase a commercial subscription.

How long is a non-commercial subscription valid for?

Non-commercial subscriptions are issued on an annual basis and must be renewed to remain valid.

Can I apply for a non-commercial subscription if I’m working on something that currently does not provide me revenue but at a later date might?

If you’re an individual working on a project that currently does not generate direct or indirect revenue, you may apply for a non-commercial subscription as long as your project does not fall into any of the other categories that require a commercial subscription (including but not limited to open-source projects with financial backing, start-up programs with financial support, etc.).

Can I opt out of sending anonymous usage statistics if using a non-commercial subscription?

If you’re using a non-commercial subscription, you cannot opt out of sending anonymous usage statistics.

If I want to use Gedcom.Net SDK for learning and do not belong to an officially recognized institution, can I apply for a non-commercial subscription?

Yes, you may apply for a non-commercial subscription for educational purposes.

Can I use Gedcom.Net SDK for developing commercial proprietary software?

Yes, Gedcom.Net SDK can be used for developing proprietary and commercial software. The only exceptions are related to creating derivative products or commercializing the Gedcom.Net SDK.

What is the difference between commercial and personal licenses?
  • A Commercial license is the standard licensing option for organizations and business entities. Licenses are purchased by the company and can be used by any single person* within this organization.

  • A Personal license is an option for private individuals who purchase a license with their own funds and solely for their own use. Personal licenses are not to be purchased, refunded, or in any way financed by companies. The software developed may not be distributed in any way for use by others, nor sold, rented, or otherwise used for profit.

Two or more users cannot use one license at the same time.

It is possible for two users to share a license if they do not work simultaneously, however if both users must work simultaneously, each active user must have their own license.

Does a personal license have limited features compared to a commercial license?

No, your personal license has the same features as commercial license. A personal license is only limited by ownership and transfer options.

Can a company purchase or reimburse a personal license?

No, according to the legal agreement, personal licenses can only be purchased by private individuals for their own use and with their own funds.

Can my company use my personal license?

No, this is prohibited by the legal agreement. Personal licenses are to be used only by individual users who purchased these licenses. If your company would like to purchase a subscription for you to use, they will need to purchase a commercial subscription.

Can I use a commercial license purchased by my company at home?

We, in the legal agreement, do not prohibit using your company commercial licenses at home. Please confirm with your employer, as it may vary depending on your company's policies.

Can multiple employees use the same commercial license?

Two or more users cannot use one license at the same time. It is possible for two users to share a license if they do not work simultaneously, however if both users must work simultaneously, each active user must have their own license.

Can we assign our commercial license to another employee?

Yes, an Organization or Team administrator can revoke and reassign a license to another employee if your previous employee no longer uses it.

Can a company transfer their commercial licenses to another company?

Yes, with our prior written consent. Please contact sales for more information and further assistance with transferring licensing to another company.
